CANNING DAM GUARD VALVE REPLACEMENT PROJECT

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Canning Dam is a 66 m high concrete gravity dam concave in shape with a crest length of 466 m. It is located on Canning River approximately 40 km south-east of Perth, and supplies water to
the Integrated Water Supply Scheme (IWSS). The dam construction commenced in 1933 and was completed in 1940. Remedial works at the dam, which included post-tensioned anchor works, was completed in 2001.

SCOPE OF WORK

The electrical and mechanical works consisted of the installation of valves, associated MSCL piping and structural steel in the valve house. The detailed scope included but was not limited to:

  • Installation of 4 off DN1050 flanged guard valves
  • Installation of rigid SS hydraulic lines from guard valves to hydraulic control cabinet
  • Install DN100 Sluice Valves
  • Install associated instrumentation and control
  • Electrical and communications cabling
  • Decommissioning of existing valve control cubicle
  • Decommissioning of existing changeover panel
  • Modifications to existing valve house Distribution Board
  • Replace and relocate lighting fixtures
  • Supply and install emergency lights in the dam gallery
  • Supply and install all power cables, GPOs and required lighting
  • Installation and termination of fibre connections
  • Removal and replacement of aging grid mesh and support platforms

SOLUTION

Baldja’s solution to the scope of work comprised of the following activities:

  • Removal of redundant valves and pipework
  • Installation of 4 off guard valves and connected MSCL piping, required to fit the new valves in place
  • Civil and mechanical preparation and installation of pipes, fittings, valves, actuators, control systems
  • Civil works including new drainage, stairs, padwork and fencing footings
  • Supply and installation of all communications and instrument cabling and associated equipment
  • Installation of new (Extended) fibre optic ring
  • Upgrade and extension of existing security works on Site including fencing, PIR detectors, DGPs, security lights, cameras and sirens

ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE

Baldja has delivered the challenging project safely and above our clients expectations. A number of aboriginal apprentices gained valuable M&E experience on the project. Baldja continue to commit a percentage of forecasted project margins to our Aboriginal Apprenticeship Program, ensuring new opportunities are created for Aboriginal people
